I have found that this function is so awesome. Gone are the days of "penning" each individual line in a piece of artwork. I cannot believe how this speeds up my work process. If you have the means, I highly recommend Illustrator CS5. Here is an example of line art that I did of Tinkerbell.

Work in progress. About 3 hours in. I have been doing so much painting on the computer lately that I needed to take a break and do some traditional art. I am getting sick of being chained to the computer to be able to create something.

One thing that I have switched up in my flow is to not do the eyelashes until I am about ready to wrap up. I tend to put them in too early because I want to see a more finished look, but it has proven to actually make my drawing more difficult because the lashes would smear and fixing it was such a hassle. So I am holding out until the end, even though the picture does not look right to me.

Ok... I recently saw a friend of mine, who is a photographer, that challenged himself to 50 days, taking one photo each day of things that he would not normally shoot to push himself creatively. I was ecited about this and adopted his challenge to suit my needs so I could get better at lighting and blending. So... I am creating one painting (apart from my regular projects) a day for 50 days and I am limited to a 1/2 hour time frame. I am hoping that this exercise will help me get better at painting.

B-Movie Contest Entry Progress

Ok... I have been mulling over this idea of a movie title for a while and I finally have an outlet to creatively express it: The B-Movie Poster Challenge over at CGSociety. I am moving much slower than I would like to be, but that is my own fault. I seem to hide behind the "creative rut" wall, but in reality my lack of inspiration or motivation is due to the little voice in my head telling me that I don't have the ability to make my vision come to fruition. I realize that typing of thinking is crippling to my creativity, but it happens every time I sit down to draw. Anyway, hopefully I will finish it in time for the deadline.

2009 Punctum Day Award Winners Announced!

The 2009 Punctum Day Award winners were selected for their outstanding quality and artistic merit in each of the six categories: Photo, Vector, Video, Audio, Flash and Design. Each of the Punctum Day Award winners in these six categories have won $5,000 USD.

The 60 finalists for six of the categories were selected from over 1,750,000 photos, vectors, videos, audio files, Flash files, and design submissions. The judging panel selecting the winners included Trish & Chris Meyer, founders of Crish Design (formerly CyberMotion), Russell Brown, Sr. Creative Director at Adobe Systems Incorporated, and Scott Kelby, Editor, Publisher, and co-founder of Photoshop User magazine and Editor-in-Chief of Layers magazine.

Ok, I brought up the suggestion to John and Russ to lean against the tree like they were in a cheesy senior portrait. I was barely able to contain myself when John posed because he was able to keep such a straight face (I almost could not take the picture because I was laughing so hard). When I first saw this guy's work, I thought that all of the subjects in his pieces were modeled in Maya. I finally got motivated enough to look up his professional site and I found that the subjects are a mix of both humans and 3D models.
He works at Blutsbrüder Design... a design studio located both in Los Angeles and Germany, which him and father started. Very cool effects. There are many more examples of the blending of human forms and 3D models on the company's website. There are also many examples on Franz's CGPortfolio site.

Below is the original photoshoot image and the post 3d production work in the piece called "Bodyshopping 01". A lot of very impressive techniques being used here.

All of these sites are free to join and are loaded with killer tutorials for everything under the digital sun. They also have forums and download areas to get custom Photoshop brushes, custom Illustrator brushes, etc. All sites have extensive galleries with some really impressive and beautiful artwork.

Pepsi vs. Coke Logo Evolution

I ran across this image on EatLiver.com today.

Very interesting in the fact that Coca Cola has not changed its logo since its birth in 1885, 13 years before Pepsi came about. While Coca Cola's logo remained the same to this day, Pepsi went through numerous logo changes and yet they are still equal competitors in the soft drink oligopoly. Judging by Pepsi's first logo (which was poorly executed in my opinion), recreating the logo could only have helped them. They could still even get away with using the 1973 logo today which, to me, is the most recognizable.
Speaking of pop that has gone to the wayside... whatever happened to Royal Crown Cola? Barrelhead Root Beer? Why did Faygo change Moonshine to Moon Mist?
The 2008 Pepsi logo is a direct Obama Change logo ripoff.
